Homesteading is becoming more and more popular these days. Some folks are looking for a simpler way of life, some are looking to return to their roots, and some are searching for a way to become more self-sufficient. Just as there are many reasons to homestead, there are also many different ways to homestead. Whether it be on a large farm or a small garden on the patio, these homesteaders seem to share a lot of common thoughts. Perhaps, if you’re a homesteader or happen to know a homesteader, the following list will bring a smile to your face or have you nodding in agreement.

You might be a Homesteader if…

  • You would rather go to the farmer’s market or Buchheit than the mall.
  • You can be found staring admiringly at the home-canned food lined up on the shelves in the cellar.
  • There are more pictures of your chickens on your Facebook page than of yourself.
  • You get excited when the dandelions take over the yard because you know you can make tea, medicine and a salad from them.
  • You consider opening gates, lifting buckets, and kneading bread a better workout than going to the gym.
  • You attempt to pay for your gas with a dozen eggs and wonder why the cashier looks confused.
  • You refer to your chickens as “the girls.”
  • You talk to your chickens as if they were people.
  • You consider your chickens as part of the family.
  • You look forward to an electrical outage so that you can use your oil lamps.
  • You get offended is someone uses the term “ugly as homemade soap” because you think your homemade soap is just beautiful!
  • You think there are Five seasons in the year: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall and “Canning” season!
