National Dog Day is celebrated each year on August 26th and was founded to bring attention to the importance of animals and to encourage adoption. This day celebrates all dogs, mixed breeds and pure.

The mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe, and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day for personal protection, for law enforcement, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and pulling victims of tragedy from wreckage, detecting cancer and seizuresā€¦things humans cannot do.

Here are some fun and simple ways to celebrate National Dog Day.

  • Take your furry friend to your local Buchheit retail store and treat them to a new toy…or two. Dogs need toys to have a healthy mind. Without a variety of dog toys, dogs can resort to finding alternative household objects to play with or chew on, like a table or sofa. When picking out toys, make sure that they are large enough that they cannot swallow or get stuck in their throat. We have a variety of toys for both heavy and light chewers.
  • Take pictures of your pet and submit them to the Buchheit Photo Barn and you may see one of your images in a Buchheit ad or store signage.
  • Consider adopting a dog from your local animal shelter or volunteer. Offer to walk dogs, clean kennels, spend time playing with dogs, or donate supplies.
  • Spend time brushing your dog. Eliminating excess fur prevents painful mats and reduces shedding. Hair is removed with a brush instead of your dog shedding around the house. It also helps to keep their coat look shiny and healthy while distributing natural oils in their fur and skin.
  • Teach your dog a new trick. Both dogs and puppies can be taught tricks and benefit from the mental stimulation and physical activity. This is also a great way to establish a lasting bond with your pet. You can reinforce the desired behavior with a treat.
  • Go for a walk. Humans and dogs should get 30 minutes or more of exercise each day. The intensity of the exercise depends on the breed, age, and overall health of the dog. Walks keep dogs interested while giving them a chance to explore and check out new smells. If you want to pay it forward, you can offer to walk an elderly or ill neighbor’s dog for some much-needed exercise.

At Buchheit, we realize that pets are a part of the family and National Dog Day is the perfect day to bring your dog to Buchheit. Regardless of how you spend the day, remember that every day is a great day to show your dog love and affection. Dogs can show us what unconditional love looks like and help make the world a little bit brighter.
