“So we’re getting rabbits”

So we are getting rabbits. This is a statement that I have heard multiple times, standing right on the Buchheit sales floor. It happens after a child has made eye contact with one of these cute little critters, and then hit mom and dad with those big puppy dog eyes. Now growing up my grandpa always had them so I never had to ask for one at the store. When I was old enough to raise them myself he gave me my starter pair and three cages. If you’re anything like me at the age of 10, I asked,...

Predators Are Us

Predators are us. Catchy title but a serious problem for anyone trying to raise livestock or grow a garden. From the masked bandit (raccoon) to the wily coyote and everyone in the middle. We don’t want any of these seeing our flocks, herds, or gardens as a food source. I have learned over the years that the there are two times of the year that these rascals are much more determined to raid for food. In the early spring when mothers have extra mouths to feed and the dead of winter when food is much more scarce. When you...

Falling into Winter

Hi! My name is Gale and I have been raising rabbits as long as I can remember. My grandpa taught me everything I know about rabbit care as his grandpa taught him and on back through the generations. Now the one thing I remember most is on the first cool morning of September, grandpa waking me up bright and early with a huge breakfast. As we ate and enjoyed each other’s company, he would tell me what all we had to do that day. “Well”, he’d say “son, we better get started getting ready for winter. It’s going to...

“The big guy in bibs”

Hello everybody my name is Gale a.k.a. “the big guy in bibs” if your looking for help in the farm department at Sparta Buchheit’s. I’m a fairly basic person, and was born and raised in southern Illinois where my family has been rooted for generations. I live my life by the three F’s “Faith, Family, and Firearms” and yes in that order. My faith runs deep I never have any doubt that the crops I plant, animals I raise, or hunts I go on will be blessed and bountiful to provide for my family. Speaking of family if it hadn’t been for both of my grandfather’s and my father’s commitment to family I wouldn’t be the man I am today, a very proud husband and father. Providing for and protecting my family is my life, and that’s how we get to the third “F”. Firearms play a huge roll in my life and are a great asset. Using firearms properly and safely is very important, from hunting and putting meat in the freezer to keeping varmints from destroying my livestock. For me, owning them is a must. Hunting and training hunting dogs, fishing, farming, raising live stock, gardening, canning, whatever it takes to take care of my family is what I do. Doing all of this to get your own groceries is fantastic and with all them groceries your...
