Now that Graci’s rabbits have come of age it is time to start the breeding process. When my daughter decided to start from scratch it didn’t bother me too much, but after she threw out the old boxes my first thought was, “O lord she is going to need to use power tools.” My second thought was, however, what a great chance to bond with my daughter while passing on some knowledge.
First things first, we figured out that we need: a few 2x6 non-treated boards, a pretty good sized sheet of ¾ in plywood, and some 1 ½ in deck screws. Since I am not made of money the first thing we did is check the “scrap pile” which is code for a big pile of lumber I refuse to throw away because I might need it one day. Jack pot! We found all the wood we needed. I had a box of screws sitting in the shed so it didn’t cost a dime.
Now it’s time to go to work. Our measurements are simple. Take your 2x6 and cut two 11½ in. long pieces and another two 14 in. long pieces. Then you mount the 14 in. boards inside the 11½ in. boards making a rectangle. That will make the outside measurements of the box 11½ in. wide by 17 in. long which is great because those are the measurements for your plywood bottom. After you cut and mount the bottom of the box you will have an inside measurement of 8½ in. wide 14 in. long and 5½ in. deep.
This is the design my family has used for generations. I hope you have as much good luck with it as we have. As always, God bless you and yours from me and mine.
